New in Sweden
Moving to a new country often means learning how public services work and what steps you need to take to settle in. Here’s an overview of some key steps for starting your new life in Sweden – and how we can support you via our state service centres.

First steps with Swedish public services
If you have recently moved to Sweden, or plan to stay here to study or work, you will usually need to complete a few practical things. These often include:
- registering your address
- applying for a personal identity number
- applying for a residence or work permit
- setting up a Swedish electronic ID (eID), such as BankID
Taking care of these matters early makes it easier to access public services, receive benefits and start working or studying.
Getting established in Sweden – how we help
At our service centres, you can get personal guidance, help and information on matters from different government agencies. For example, we can help you with:
- Starting a new job: tax registration, reporting your income and understanding what social insurance covers.
- Sorting out your residence status: applying for a personal identity number, extending or applying for a residence permit, and registering your address.
- Accessing benefits: getting information about parental leave, child benefit and healthcarebenefits .
- Managing practical matters: setting up your Swedish eID (such as BankID), using online services and updating your contact details.
Our job is to help you understand these procedures and manage matters involving different government agencies more easily. We work together with the Swedish Tax Agency, the Swedish Migration Agency, the Swedish Social Insurance Agency, the Swedish Public Employment Service and the Swedish Pensions Agency.
